Subject: Quirky Little Volume Worth Quick Read
Subject: Quirky Little Volume Worth Quick Read
This is an interesting volume, but disappointing to anyone looking for a substantive discussion of the Statue of Liberty. Published by the Illustrated
...
Press Bureau, it features seven engravings offered to the press in anticipation of the unveiling of Lady Liberty. Though the volume includes nearly 200 pp., only 7 have text and illustrations. The others are blank. One assumes that it was offered to newspapers and magazines that would cover the inaugural event and that the blank pages were offered for reporters' notes. As for the limited text and illustrations, they provide quirky background on such matters as the statue's dimensions, its protection against lightning (four lightning rods) and other interesting trivia. There's a nice portrait of the handsome Bartholdi and mention of his other works, including a statue of Lafayette in Manhattan’s Union Square (Still there!). Overall, a quirky, little volume worth a quick look. Footnote: The Statue of Liberty had not yet earned its association with “huddled masses” of immigrants. There’s not a single mention of immigration.
